“What is the St. Hugo Spirit?

It’s living, breathing and calling our students and teachers to a life guided by the footsteps of Jesus Christ.  At St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic School, we pray each day, ‘As followers of Jesus, it must be different with us.’  And that difference is how we respect our colleagues and classmates.  That difference is how we care for each other.  That difference is how we stand up for what is right and just.  That difference is how we learn from one another.   That difference is our unwavering Faith.  Each day at school we learn and grow in many different ways… but Vikings not only grow closer together as a family, we grow closer to God.

Excellence

Established in 1940 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we celebrate our 80th Anniversary with an unrelenting commitment to excellence. We are an accredited parochial school, educating students in the Kindergarten Readiness Program (4 years old by September 1st) through the 8th grade. Awarded a National Blue Ribbon School, St. Hugo Alumni choose St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic School for their own children (families) because of the “St. Hugo Experience.”

Faith

Students participate in Religion class daily, and celebrate Mass weekly with their classmates and teachers.  As part of their religious education, students prepare for the sacraments of First Communion, Reconciliation, and Confirmation.  St. Hugo School encourages students to put their faith into action by organizing monthly service projects, such as food and clothing drives.  Also, there are many special outreach events during Catholic Schools Week, such as the “Volunteer Vikings Day of Service” where students lend helping hands to non-profit organizations across the Metropolitan Detroit area.

Tradition

We offer a traditional curriculum which exceeds the Michigan State Standards of Education.  Students will study Religion, Math, Language Arts (Reading, Grammar, Creative Writing), Science, Social Studies, Vocabulary, Spelling and Penmanship.  The program of study also includes Technology, Spanish, Art, Physical Education and Library.

Dedication

Our teachers are dedicated to the mission of the Catholic Faith.  Teachers at St. Hugo encourage students to think creatively, problem solve methodically and question analytically.  For children who may need additional support, resource staff is available to ensure every student achieves their full potential.  Over 80% of our faculty hold Master’s Degrees, and all of our classrooms are furnished with the most current teaching tools, including Smart Boards and Chromebooks.

Leadership

Mentor Relationships are unbreakable bonds among St. Hugo Students.  Projects like Kindergarten Readiness Buddies, Kinder Buddies, Book Buddies, Sacrament Buddies, and  STEAM Day Team Activities promote positive and joy-filled interactions between the lower and upper grades.  The younger students view the older students as friends, mentors and leaders.  St. Hugo students consider it an honor to help and look out for their little buddy.  When the younger children grow up and become the “Big Buddy”, they know how special it is to receive that attention from their St. Hugo friend.
