Kindergarten Curriculum and Goals
Kindergarten is a combination of academics and individualized learning experiences. The curriculum includes the following academics and specials.
Religion: The text for Kindergarten Religion is We Believe by Sadlier. Units include:
- God Gives Us Many Gifts
- God is Our Creator
- Jesus Shows Us God’s Love
- Jesus Wants Us to Share God’s Love
Activities: Songs and stories, videos, art, prayers, lessons on values
Reading/Language Arts: The textbook is Journeys by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Children develop phonemic awareness, comprehension, and vocabulary skills. Some of the supplemental material utilized includes: TLC Art-letter books, reading workbooks, and journal writing.
Spanish: Students meet weekly with Senora LoVasco.
Library: Students visit weekly with guest readers
COMMUNICATION: Every Friday a newsletter is sent home describing the week’s activities and projects and events for the following week. Please read the newsletter carefully. Discussing its contents with your child is a lovely way to end the school week!
Mathematics: Our math series is Houghton Mifflin Math. Our curriculum includes positions and patterns, classification; comparing sets, data and graphing; geometry, fractions, probability; numbers through 12; time and money; measurement; addition and subtraction through 10; greater numbers (10-20, greater than 20.)
Science: Our Science series is Interactive Science by Pearson. Units of study include: Engineering and Technology, Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science.
Social Science: Units of study focus on the world around us, holiday celebrations, map skills, important people in history and community helpers.
Health/Safety: Units of study focus on fire safety, dental/personal health, and nutrition.
Art: Different art mediums are used for seasonal and subject-related projects. Students meet weekly with Ms. Bitzinger and art projects are completed within the classroom as well.
Music: Music enrichment is incorporated in classroom activities. Also, Mrs. Rao will provide music instruction within the classroom to prepare for the December Christmas performance.
Computer: Kindergarten students have small group instruction with Mrs. Kowalewski.
Physical Education: All-day kinders are scheduled twice weekly for gym classes; half-day kinders have gym classes once a week.
